2nd Best Day

It's finally here. The 2nd best day of the year. Not for me, just Elaine. If it were up to me I don't know if today is even in my top ten. I have always put Christmas in first place and then maybe my birthday followed by when the kids moved out of the house. That one is not a recurring day so it should not be on the list. I always like when the kids come back as long as they leave towards nightfall. That also is not a recurring day, which also makes it nice.

For more than sixty years this would have been just another day for Elaine, but people change. Elaine changed. I don't want to admit this out load but it might have been my fault. You see, a few years back I was waiting for back surgery. Yes, I am waiting again, but this is different. I couldn't walk very far and Elaine thought she needed to do EVERTHING for me. OK, she did need to do most everything for me, and I love her for it. I couldn't do much but sit in my recliner and watch television. Elaine was never far away in case I needed a fresh iced tea or a frosted donut. OK, she didn't bring me donuts but it would have been nice.

At least two times a week a football game would be on television. Neither one of us were big football fans but it was something to pass the time. Elaine started to watch the games and ask questions The questions weren't exactly annoying, OK they were annoying. "Why do they have a matte finish on their helmets?" Questions like that, In time she developed favorite players, usually based on the color of their shoes. She start telling me "Hey, there is a game on tonight".

Elaine would get her knitting, water bottle, and tablet (in case she needed to look up a player's spouse, height weight or gender. (I made the gender part up, its 2024 and you never know.)

Getting back to the 2nd best day. Elaine has been waiting for this day since February which hold her 1st best day. Today, NFL football is on television. Elaine has been waiting since the Super Bowl for this day.

I liked playing football more than watching, but my back needs attention so I guess I can watch with her.

So, go Chiefs, Bills, Packers, Bengals , Jets, and any team with matte helmets and colorful shoes. Strangely, I left out the local team because the coach is mean.
